03. Vaccinations and Health Precautions

There are no mandatory vaccinations required to travel to Bonaire. However, it is wise to be aware of mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika, dengue, and chikungunya, which are occasionally present in the region. To protect yourself, use mosquito repellent regularly, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and consider wearing long sleeves and pants in the evenings.
Bonaire’s healthcare facilities are good for minor illnesses and injuries, but for serious medical emergencies, patients may need to be transferred to Curaçao or other nearby islands. For this reason, having travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is highly recommended.
The island is generally very safe with low crime rates. Petty theft can happen, particularly around popular tourist spots, dive sites, or in parked vehicles, so always keep your valuables secure and avoid leaving belongings unattended. Drinking tap water is safe, as it is desalinated and treated.
Finally, always follow local safety guidelines when enjoying outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, or hiking, and respect the fragile natural environment to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
