Bonaire Info
08. Languages

Bonaire is a multilingual island where several languages are spoken daily. The official language is Dutch, used in government and formal settings. The most widely spoken language among locals is Papiamentu, a Creole language with roots in Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and African languages. English and Spanish are also commonly understood, especially in the tourism industry, so most visitors will have no problem communicating.
While many people in Bonaire speak multiple languages fluently, learning a few basic phrases in Papiamentu, such as “Bon dia” (Good morning) or “Danki” (Thank you), is a great way to connect with locals and show appreciation for the island’s culture.
