39. Tipping
Tipping in Aruba follows a system that can be a bit confusing at first, so it's important to check your bill carefully. Many restaurants and bars automatically add a service charge of 10-15% to your bill, which is distributed among all staff including kitchen personnel. This service charge is different from a tip—it doesn't go directly to your server.
If a service charge is included, you're not required to leave additional money, though many people choose to leave an extra 5-10% in cash for exceptional service. If there's no service charge added, the standard tip is 15-20% of the total bill. Always check your receipt before tipping to avoid accidentally double-tipping.
For bartenders, tip $1-2 per drink or 10-15% of your tab. For taxi drivers, 10-15% is appreciated. Hotel housekeeping staff typically receive $2-5 per day, left daily since different staff may clean your room each day. Tour guides generally receive $5-10 per person for half-day tours, or $10-20 per person for full-day excursions. Remember that service workers in Aruba earn a legal minimum wage (unlike some countries where tips make up the bulk of income), but tipping is still very much appreciated for good service.
