42. Grocery Shopping
Grocery shopping in Aruba is convenient and well-organized, though you'll notice that almost everything is imported, which means prices are higher than what you might be used to at home. The island's major supermarkets are modern, clean, and well-stocked with both European (especially Dutch) and American products. You'll find familiar brands alongside local Caribbean items, making it easy to cook your favorite meals or try something new.
Here's an insider tip: the best day to shop is Thursday, the worst is Tuesday. Most cargo ships arrive on Tuesdays, so by Wednesday afternoon/Thursday morning, stores are fully restocked with fresh produce and products. By the following Tuesday, shelves are often picked over. Some stores offer discounts on Tuesdays to encourage shopping on slower days. Also note that stores typically close at 8pm on weekdays, have reduced hours on Sundays (closing between 2-6pm), and close completely on major holidays.
Important to know: Aruba banned single-use plastic bags, so bring your own reusable shopping bags or purchase them at checkout (usually $1-4). The checkout bags often say "ARUBA" on them and make great souvenirs! You'll also need a quarter or token for shopping carts at some stores. Many stores offer online ordering with delivery or curbside pickup for added convenience. The young men who bag your groceries and help carry them to your car work on tips (they're saving for college), so it's customary to tip them $1-3 depending on your order size. US dollars are widely accepted, and prices are sometimes listed in both Aruban Florins (AWG) and USD.
